After reading 34-37, answer the two questions below. Make sure you label question 1 and question 2 in your answer.

Question 1:
How has Brian and Mike’s relationship changed? How would you define their relationship now? Are they friends? Brothers?

Question 2:
What do you think the theme of this story is? Why?

Q1: Brian and Mike’s relationship has changed many times. At first they were practically brothers, but then Mike got too comfortable with Brian and got them both into trouble. They were then no longer friends even though people still called them brothers. Then Mike talked to Ma and confessed to Ma and Brian. But then when Brian and Mike hung out in Brian’s apartment, they got into a fight within an hour. Now, mike and Brian are no longer friends and I don’t think they will be again.

Q2: I think the theme of the story is that it is good to have friends, and great if you have very close friends, but you have to be careful when choosing friends because in the end they might cause you trouble. This is because in the start of Tight, Brian is in the market for friends, but Ma thinks he should focus on his schoolwork. Then, Brian meets Mike. At first they are great together, but slowly Mike is becoming a worse and worse friend to Brian. When this is happening, Brian meets Kamau, and Brian thinks he is a much better fit. Then, of course, Mike goes over the top and gets both of them in huge trouble. they also get into fights, and finally their friendship is no longer. Brian also finds big Will is a much better friend.

I totally agree with you on question 2. That is a perfect theme for the book.

Q1: Mike's and Bryan's relationships have changed drastically. at first Mike and Bryan were like brothers, then Mike started being really mean to Bryan and at one point tried to steal Bryan's stuff. They are no longer friends and Mike is mean to Bryan. Q2: I think the theme of the story is to not explode and control yourself, also to get real friends. I think that is the theme of the story because Bryan tries to not explode at Mike after he does some mean stuff, but snaps at the end of the book and almost gets himself into an even worse situation. Also Mike keeps calling Bryan soft and being mean in general which is a thing only fake friends would do, but eventually Bryan finds big will and realizes how Mike was a fake friend.

I agree with you on Question 1 about how Mike was being mean to Brain and Mike aren't really friends anymore.

Question 1: Brian and Mike's relationship has changed in an interesting way. In the beginning of the story they were like brothers. They were really close and liked a lot of the same things, but then things took a wrong turn of events. Mike starts to be more and more like Pa and then things get kinda out of hand. Like when Kevin got arrested or when Brain almost got in a fight with Mike's goons. Now they were not brothers and not really friends either. Finally they started to be friends again, but it didn't last. Their relationship is very complicated and in the works of getting better.
Question 2: I think that the theme of the story is to be friends with the people you want to be friends with. Not the people you think you have to be friends with. I think this is the theme because this whole story Brian thinks that he has to be friends with Mike because his parents liked him at first. Once he got to be better friends with Big Will he was much happier, because Will was more like him. Brian and Mike aren't really friends now and Brian is OK with that. You should never be forced to be friends with someone because you think you have to.
